Have You Tried A Healthy Green Juice?

5 Comments 15 January 2013

Have you tried a green juice yet?

They’re all the rage.

Sound scary?

It might help you to know I converted two former vegetable haters into green juice drinkers with this green juice recipe.

[brushes shoulder off]

I didn’t push it.

I understand that the term “green juice” sounds like it should taste nasty. And I know that the thought of “drinking” vegetables doesn’t exactly sound like fun.

I just made my green juice and let them watch me make it. I also dusted off the Riedel champagne flutes for presentation.

The converts were my sixteen year old nephew and my thirty year old housemate. Just weeks before this green juice experience, my nephew told me he had never eaten salad! He had an aversion to any vegetable that was green. And my housemate had the same palate.

I casually poured them each a sample sized portion and muttered something like, “I’m not going to waste too much on them.” heh heh

They braced themselves before the big taste, but soon experienced the old adage about looks and deception.

And get this, now my nephew and my housemate regularly make green juice!

Even though I feel a little smug knowing I got them hooked on green juice, they deserve a little credit for actually trying something they thought they wouldn’t like.

Way to go, guys!

How To Make Green Juice

I personally owe Kris Carr a big thank you for introducing me to green juice a few years ago. I was happy to find out she had linked to Celiac Chicks on her blog, and while checking it out I discovered an intriguing green juice recipe in the sidebar.

Try to buy organic produce, but if you can’t, don’t let that stop you from getting started.

1 broccoli stem – yup, the “trunk” part you usually throw away.
1 whole unpeeled cucumber
1 apple – green is nice, but any will do
1 handful of kale
1 small head of Romaine lettuce
3 stalks of celery

Wash vegetables and apple. Cut to fit your juicer. Juice!

Don’t have a juicer yet? I have a Juiceman juicer and love it!

If you need more sweetness, feel free to add another apple. It’s OK! 🙂

PS: And pahleez tell us in the comments what you think after you try one!
OR please share with us your own green juice recipe! Thx!

Any suggestions for substituting the apple? I’m allergic to apples. 😀 Should I just do something sweet?

Hi! I’ve seen lots of recipes for green juices, and decided to give yours a try. I have a juicer that looks similar to yours, but for some reason it just spits out the kale without juicing it! Has this ever happened to you/do you have any tips for getting it to juice? Thanks!

Hey Alyssa! Hmm….kale isn’t a problem with my juicer. Weird.
OK, here is what I would do: make the rest of the juice in the juicer. Add it to your blender and then blend the kale into the juice. Might have a little texture….but that’s good for ya! 🙂

Do you find it easier to digest the broccoli & kale when it is in juice form? I would love to try this recipe but I have difficulties with uncooked veggies :/
