Exciting things are happening at Friedman’s Deli! As of today at 5pm they are closing their doors until January in order to remodel. The space will be redesigned using lots of warm woods in order to create a cozier dining experience. It will be rustic and charming at the same time, in a Le Pain Quotidian sort of way. When they reopen the name will be shortened to just Friedman’s.

Tryg Siverson, the new executive chef, is creating the new local and seasonally focused menu to be almost entirely gluten-free. For starters, Friedman’s will not only serve The Grainless Baker’s bread, but they are on the hunt to find one other gluten-free bread to serve. This is because Vanessa Phillips, as a fellow patient with celiac disease and a consultant to Friedman’s, understands how important variety and choices are to all of us. Vanessa also knows how much we love our fried potatoes, so there will be a dedicated fryer for homemade gluten-free potato chips, potato pancakes and french fries!

Here is a rough draft of the new menu. Notice the clear symbol for items that can be made gluten-free.

Friedman’s will also have daily specials, fresh juices, and a brunch menu.

Oh, and a liquor license for gluten-free beer is in progress.

Stay tuned and I’ll be sure to let you know when Friedman’s is ready to reopen. You can plan on a fun gluten-free event in the near future!

Best news ever! I was just there yesterday and had no idea they were doing this. A sandwich and fries for lunch with a beer?! I am STOKED!

Wow – GF Burger & GF Fries!! GF Pastrami & GF Latkes!! I will be there!

I’d only recommend one more thing to make it perfect: add a GF veggie burger option!

And as for GF breads, Vanessa and Tryg should try a burger or Pastrami on a Katz challah roll…

I’ll have to add this to my list of restaurants to visit on my next trip to New York. Can’t wait! : )

Do you know when they’re opening back up? I have a bat-mitzvah to go to in the city Jan 31 that’s serving deli sandwhiches and they’re insisting on figuring a way to serve me and my bf gluten free. This would be an easy, safer option then having them buy a loaf of GF bread and make sandwiches for us.

Amy- I don’t know yet when they’ll reopen, but I’m sure it will be before the end of the month. I would still try to call them to plan ahead.

    Hi Amy,

I am one of the owners of Friedmans and wanted to let you know that we will be open and running by January 31st. Feel free to contact me at v.tayler@gmail.com and I can give you more info on our gluten free options.
