Easy Peasy Split Pea Soup

It’s a cold, wet February day.  Winter is about to end, Spring is just around the corner, and the new year is well on it’s way.

How about some easy, gluten-free split pea soup? (And btw, do you know how hard it is to make split pea soup look pretty in a photo? Pretty hard. ;))



1 package of dry green split peas
1 small onion, chopped
1 carrot, diced
1 clove of garlic, minced
1-2 chicken legs (I used organic)
6 cups of water
1 package of sliced ham, chopped*
1 bay leaf
salt & pepper to taste
optional: dash of liquid smoke

*I used Applegate brand organic ham. If you can get your hands on an organic hambone, even better!)


Search through dry green split peas for little rocks or nasty looking peas and discard.

Rinse dry green split peas in colander.

Assemble all of the ingredients in your slow cooker.

Set on low for 6-8 hours – depends on how your slow cooker works.  You’re going to want to cook this pretty much all day.

Discard chicken bones and bay leaf.
