Nueva Cocina Foods

13 Comments 12 March 2008

If you have ever checked out Spanish style food mixes and foodstuffs, they are usually full of not only gluten, but msg, dyes, and other unhealthy ingredients. Nueva Cocina has created something new that is healthy, convenient and tasty.

Nueva Cocina Foods will be giving away samples of their all natural, no preservatives gluten-free seasonings (Chipotle Taco, Taco Fresco, and Cuban Picadillo) to 100 people during the week of March 12th through March 19th, 2008. Send your name, email address and mailing address to with "celiac chicks giveaway" in the subject.

Nueva Cocina is dedicated to bringing the exciting and flavorful foods of Latin America to American consumers.  These products reflect the authentic cuisine of the region as well as the contemporary “Nuevo Latino” recipes that are convenient and easy to prepare. They offer, all natural, gourmet quality products, nine of which are gluten free out of a total 14 items*. You can find their items to buy either online or in grocery stores nationwide.

*The only items that are not gluten-free are:
black beans & rice, red beans & rice
pumpkin soup, sweet corn soup with chiles

Also, the gluten-free items are made in the same facility that the gluten containing items are made, but great care is taken to clean the machines properly between each batch.

Their labeling is confusing–the ingredients include gluten but the package says “gluten free”. Some people aren’t going to read the ingredients and get sick, I fear.

Amy- Good catch! I’m going to call the company asap and tell them about the mistake. I didn’t check the products that they told me were NOT gluten-free. Looks like only the beans and rice packets are mistakenly labelled as gluten-free while gluten is in the ingredients. It may even be just a mistake on their website. The company rep I communicated with was very clear about what to include in the list I wanted of the few items that were NOT gluten-free. I’m now extra glad that I included that list. I’m guessing it is just a mistake in their web copy.
    Thanks for pointing it out!

I just made the Nueva Cocina red bean soup and it was delicious! It was easy…took about 30 minutes and was perfect with warm brown rice tortillas. I definitely would buy more of these to have on hand for nights that you just don’t have a lot of time or energy to cook.

What a great recommendation! I’ve had a really hard time finding soups. And, my sister-in-law spent a lot of time looking for a GF rice mix this weekend. Thanks!

Looks good…but I want to know where Kelly gets brown rice tortillas. I’ve never seen them anywhere.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

I just made dinner with the chipotle beef seasoning and WOW – it was TASTY. A nice kick, not too spicy and even had some sort of fruity bits – raisins, I think. I put the seasoning on ground turkey, added tomato sauce and some cubed zucchini and simmered for a while – then poured it over slices of polenta, topped with cheese and baked it. Now I have to buy some of this seasoning because it is going to become a potluck staple. I never liked polento so this somehow managed to turn it into something amazing. Thanks for the hook up!

I just got my special offer in the mail. I was disappointed to read that modified food starch is listed as an ingredient. I do not generally buy ANYTHING with MFS in it. I’m still on the fence as to wether or not I’m going to try it or give it to my non-celiac family members.

Hello Chicks! I was feeling like a slacker for not posting something new (fatigued and overwhelmed from moving) but now I’m glad I left this up here. Thank you so much for your personal reviews!

KathyF- the brown rice tortillas are hard to come by! I don’t even see them at my Whole Foods…but I find them sometimes at smaller health food stores. The one I found these at is called Health Nuts on 3rd Ave. and (46th?) street in NYC. I’ve also found them in Brooklyn Heights at Perelandra. When I see them I buy a ton and freeze them in ziploc freezer bags and they are always good into my cast iron skillet with a little oil. If fresh they microwave ok, but I like them better heated in the pan. Oh, and the company is Food For Life.

Eileen- Aren’t you creative in the kitchen! Glad you liked it!

Jenn- Good going on being a thorough label reader, but most modified food starch in the United States is gluten-free and made from corn…or other veggies. Sorry for the scare. I’m going to recommend they clarify on their labels. To ease your mind just Google “modified food starch gluten” and you’ll find just what I said. I asked the co. rep to stop by the site and leave a comment to further assure you.

Hello all– I am a rep for Nueva Cocina, and I wanted to let everyone know that the modified food starch in our products comes from corn or tapioca-mostly corn.

Thank you all for your feedback, and feel free to contact us at with any questions, comments, or concerns! ENJOY YOUR GLUTEN FREE PRODUCTS
