What is this? It’s my artsy shot of the new Trader Joe’s near Union Square.

I thought people were waiting in line for an event at the adjacent building, but no, it was actually the line to get into Trader Joe’s! I counted about fifty die hard soon-to-be Trader Joe’s customers.

I was a sleepy Celiac Chick so I didn’t have the strength to wait to get inside. Maybe that was a good thing. I called the next day and asked when is the best time to beat the crowds. Turns out it’s 9 a.m. They do carry all of the gluten-free breads and pasta that you’ve heard about. As an experienced west coast TJ’s customer, I can attest to the fact that they are reasonably priced and quite tasty.

I have been buying TJ’s GF Brown Rice Bread since it appeared in the store and I LOVE it!

I have a fondness for their wine selection too 😉

I’ve been to their website and looked for their gluten-free menu. Some of the items they put on their list have the infamous “modified food starch”. I told the store manager, but doubt he has much say about it.

I am much happier with Wild Oats. They have more items that are gluten-free, and have them clearly labelled.

Jenn- Modified food starch in the US is most likely from corn. I think with the new labeling laws manufacturers have to list which top allergen the starch is made from if it falls into that category. If “wheat” is not listed after the starch then it’s more than likely made from corn. We still have to always make sure it is safe, because it can be made from wheat.
Where do you live? It might help others to know where there is a handy Wild Oats. I don’t think Wild Oats stores are in New York yet.

I am the designer and owner of a non for profit Gluten Free bar and recipe website entitled

While networking via Myspace, I came across your site.

I would like to include a link to your site as a resource, and if you are willing to exchange favors I would be happy to add a banner or graphic to your site if you will do the same for mine.

I am going live with the website very shortly, and have a number of Celiac and GF orgs around the country ready to join.

If you would like to be included please let me know.

    Thank you,

Went to this very Trader Joe’s yesterday and asked a staff member about whether 2 of the new products were gluten free (as they were unlabeled, but looked like they’d be fine). He called HQ and the woman he spoke with said that they are NO LONGER labeling new products gluten-free, and she refused to answer any follow-up questions about the ingredients used in these products. This is irresponsible and out-of-line. I was furious. I spoke to the managers, and they said that customers contacting Trader Joe’s themselves were the best way to get this addressed and stopped. Can you help spread awareness about this issue? I was infuriated and heartbroken by this news yesterday.

    Thank you,
