Gluten-Free Starbucks Update

15 Comments 24 April 2008

When I asked you to vote for gluten-free food at Starbucks the number of votes was around 500. Now almost 6000 people have told Starbucks they would like something gluten-free to nosh on with their coffee. We’ve got Starbucks attention, now they have asked us to post a comment specifically telling them what kind of gluten-free food we want. They don’t necessarily want brand names, but categories like "muffins, cookies, lunch…", whatever you genuinely would buy if they had a gluten-free version available. So now is our chance to tell them exactly what we want! Go ahead, don’t be shy.

My middle son (almost 5) has Celiac and I’d really LOVE to be able to give him a cookie or blueberry muffin at Starbucks, or maybe even a lunch (GF mac and cheese would be perfect! OR a GF grilled cheese?). There are so many Starbucks around, which we have to avoid when we’re all out – but if they were the first to make it easy for gluten-free eaters — they would get a ton of business from us! Thank you!

Packaged GF cookies, (Nana’s Cookie Bars come to mind), GF snack options (nuts, chips and crunchy stuff like Potato Flyers), and GF lunch options (salads made without croutons or breaded chicken) would be most welcome. Most of the prepared foods Starbucks already carries would be fine for us if they made a few changes in their ingredients. GF breakfast breads like cranberry orange bread, zucchini bread and pound cake slices would all be great, as well. Kudos to Starbucks and you guys for hearing our requests!!

I’d leave a comment there if I didn’t have to “log in”. 🙁 I’ve never in my life been to Starbucks because I’m not a coffee drinker- or sweet drinks or caffeine for that matter! HOWEVER, I would become a REGULAR customer if I could go through their drive-thru window and get a snack or meal that I can eat in the car. Burgers used to always be great for this purpose, but now I have to hit a gas station or grocery store for something quick, and that’s often not so quick… I spent a half-hour in a grocery last night trying to find something to eat in the car after working a loooong day. If I could hit the drive-thru, I’d be there!!

There are so many good gluten free groceries on the market that I think the best move would be to strike a deal with a certain group of products. Since they’re pre-packaged, that would ease cross-contamination worries.

Perhaps they could have single serving mini-boxes of the new GF Rice Chex on hand for breakfasts. Single-serving packaged “Jennie’s Coconut Macaroons” would be incredible, too! Glutano Breakfast bars and Attune probiotic bars would make a good addition, and so would Nana’s cookies!

My college coffee shop had a microwave available, and they offered the Thai Kitchen noodley boxes and soup bowls. It’d be nice to see something like that! or maybe some other kind of single serving soup or sandwich!

My husband would like to see donuts and muffins for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and cookies for a snack. It would be so nice for us to have some convenient options.

Would love to be able to have ANYTHING with my coffee, it is hard to go and not be tempted by the other products, so it would be nice to have a choice to have a sweet treat ot not???

I wish that the GF items could be displayed like all of the other baked goods. Somehow prepackaged mass produced items don’t have the appeal of the fresh baked goods. But of course, putting a GF item in with all of the non gf items would be useless. So, I vote for biscotti. Something that doesn’t need to look/be fresh, is usually individually wrapped, goes perfectly with coffee, and basically is just as good gf as not.
But let’s get real- I would like everyone of those great looking baked goods to be gf- then of course, I would be the size of a barn!

I hope I’m not too late to add my 2 cents! I am a die hard Dunkin Donuts fan, but if Starbucks were to offer gluten free muffins or breads, I would dump DD in a heartbeat and go to Starbucks. It would make my life so much easier.
