I'm sure you are familiar with the saying, "Timing is everything."
Well, I think it is time for gluten-free to go mainstream on TV. What do you think?
I have a little secret to tell you. It’s actually a funny story. Last Fall I just happened to meet the top dog of a huge food channel. My good friend is a serious networker and I attended a charity event that she helps organize. At one point in the evening, she took me over to meet some guy. In true schmoozer fashion she gave me a killer introduction, as if I’m, you know, the best food blogger in the world. I was holding back an eye roll while blushing and thinking something sarcastic like, “Uh, yeah, OK.” So, she then asks this gentleman if his network is interested in the topic of gluten-free. His reply was affirmative. He then turned to me and asked me to explain what it is exactly that I do. So, without an agenda, because I didn’t know at this point who this random man was, I somehow rattled off whatever the heck it is that I do here on Celiac Chicks. And, no doubt thanks to the help of the mojitos I had quaffed earlier in the evening, I sounded more articulate than usual. (btw, don’t you love it when that happens?!!) So, he mentioned again that the network was indeed interested in the topic of gluten-free. Then he asked if I had any video of me in action. I nonchalantly was all, “Oh yeah.” At this point I had no idea what I was getting into. He in turn handed me his card and requested that I send it to him to look over.
OK, so the next day, in a stupor due to lack of sleep, I proceeded to look at all of the business cards that I had collected. I found his card and the network and top dog title jumped out at me. I suddenly got nervous. I suddenly was wide awake. I Googled his name in disbelief and lo and behold…oh my…oh no…no way…what?!!!!!!! THAT is WHO I was chatting it up with?!!!!!!! Hyperventilation suddenly set in. What the freak?!!! Then I suddenly found it all very funny. I guess the way it unfolded was best, since I didn’t have an agenda when working the room and I definitely had no clue who I was talking to. I just did what I do best and chatted it up Celiac Chick style.
So, I then mulled it all over for a few days and talked to Kim about it. Even though I’m not really a spotlight person, (ever notice how I rarely post photos of myself on here?) we both decided that this was an opportunity for gluten-free awareness and that we had to give it our best shot, regardless of the outcome. We knew that just the process of making a cute little video would be fun. We’ve made a film before, some of you may be familiar with our Gluten-Free Chinatown video we made years ago, but the info is now outdated. Interestingly, a year earlier I had purchased a prosumer HD video camera that was looking a little depressed and lonely, so that was another “go”.
So here we are launching Celiac Chicks TV. Whooo Hoooo! Any critiques, comments, visions, insights, and verbal tomatoes are completely welcome! We’d looove feedback and especially ideas for future projects you’d like to see.
I’m about to email the link to this video to my contact. We’ll see what happens. I’m not expecting anything, really, but as you know, we have to try. And it was super fun making this. It took a lot of time. I hope it makes you laugh at least a little, even at my expense. That was the overall plan.
Oh, and please please please feel free to share the video as much as possible within your personal and gluten-free networks. I think that the more “viral” it looks with a large amount of views, the more my contact may see that the time is right for this type of show. AND, as I mentioned before, since timing is everything, it is a totally fun and beautiful cowinkidink that Gluten-Free Girl just entered the Oprah’s Own TV Show contest. Please please please vote for her here! We have to spread the gluten-free word to producers everywhere! Even if we don’t end up on TV, it doesn’t really matter. What matters most is that we gave it our all, and together we’ve all done our part to reach and teach others about celiac disease, gluten-free foods, and countless related topics.
